Holi

Festival of colors

About Holi (होली)

Holi is India's most exuberant festival — the festival of colours, of laughter, of forgiveness, and of the arrival of spring. It marks the victory of good over evil through the legend of Prahlad and Holika, and celebrates the playful love of Radha and Krishna. For two days, social hierarchies dissolve: friends and strangers alike douse each other in vivid gulal powder and tinted water, sharing thandai, gujiya, and bhang. Holi reminds India that joy lives in colour, in shared meals, and in the courage to forgive old hurts at the start of every new season.

When and why Holi is celebrated

Holi falls on the full moon (Purnima) of the Phalguna month — usually March. In 2026, Holi is on Wednesday, 4 March. (For 2027, it falls on Monday, 22 March.) The festival has two main days: Holika Dahan on Phalguna Purnima eve (a bonfire commemorating the burning of demoness Holika), and Rangwali Holi the next morning (the colour-play day everyone knows). The dates always track the lunar calendar, which is why Holi can fall anywhere from late February to late March.

Holi traditions and regional variations across India

Holi traditions vary across India in flavour and intensity. In Mathura and Vrindavan — Krishna's homeland — Holi celebrations stretch for over a week, with Lathmar Holi (women playfully beating men with sticks), Phoolon Ki Holi (flower petals instead of colours), and devotional Braj Holi. In Punjab, Sikhs celebrate Hola Mohalla with martial-arts displays. In Bengal, the festival is called Dol Jatra or Basanta Utsav, made famous by Tagore at Santiniketan. In Gujarat, Holi merges with Dhuleti — communities gather around bonfires, eat khaman dhokla and gujiya, and sing folk songs. In South India, Holi is quieter but still observed with prayers and sweet offerings.

How to make a beautiful Holi wish card

Holi wish cards should feel as vibrant as the festival itself. Our Canva backgrounds feature mid-air gulal powder explosions in pink, yellow, blue, and green; top-down bowls of brilliant colour pigments; macro shots of powder hearts; and water-splash action shots. Pair them with energetic, casual-tone wishes — Holi is the one festival where formal wishes feel out of place. For close friends, our "funny" category Holi wishes work brilliantly. For family elders, choose the marigold-and-powder mix background with a heartfelt formal wish. Hindi and regional language wishes carry more warmth than English. Sign off with "Holi Mubarak", "Happy Holi", or "होली की शुभकामनाएं".

Holi card maker — FAQ

When is Holi in 2026 and 2027?

Holi 2026 is on Wednesday, 4 March. Holi 2027 is on Monday, 22 March. The date is set by the Hindu lunar calendar — specifically the full moon (Purnima) of Phalguna month, which shifts by ~11 days every Gregorian year.

What is Holika Dahan and how is it different from Holi?

Holika Dahan is the bonfire night on the eve of Holi, commemorating the legend of Prahlad and the burning of demoness Holika. It happens the night before the colour-play day (Rangwali Holi). Holika Dahan is more sombre and ritualistic; the next day is the joyful, colour-filled celebration most people know as "Holi".

How should I wish someone "Happy Holi" in different languages?

We have native-script wishes ready in all 11 Indian languages.

What's the best Holi card background for a family wish?

For family wishes, our "Color Bowls" or "Marigold + Powder" background works best — they feel celebratory but not chaotic. For close friends or younger relatives, the dramatic "Gulal Explosion" or "Color Water Splash" backgrounds add energy. Avoid using the "Heart-shaped powder mound" frame for formal family wishes; save it for romantic or close-friend cards.

Yes — use our /photo-wish-card/holi/ page to upload your selfie, pick a Holi background, choose a frame (Heart frame works great for couple shots), and add a wish in any of 11 languages. The card downloads instantly as a free HD PNG.
