Nine nights of devotion and dance

About Navratri (नवरात्रि)

Navratri — literally "nine nights" — is a nine-day Hindu festival worshipping the nine forms of Goddess Durga. It celebrates feminine divine power (Shakti), victory of good over evil, and the spiritual rebirth that comes from connecting with the goddess. Across India, the festival takes radically different forms: garba and dandiya dancing in Gujarat, elaborate Durga Puja pandals in Bengal, Bommai Golu doll displays in South India, and quiet fasting and prayer in North India.

When and why Navratri is celebrated

Navratri occurs twice a year — Sharad Navratri (autumn) and Chaitra Navratri (spring). Sharad Navratri is the larger, more widely celebrated version. In 2026, Sharad Navratri begins on Monday, 12 October and ends with Dussehra on 20 October. The nine days honour nine forms of Durga (called Nava Durga): Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri — each associated with a specific colour worn that day. The 10th day is Vijayadashami / Dussehra — the day Lord Rama killed Ravana.

Navratri traditions and regional variations across India

Navratri traditions vary breathtakingly across India. In Gujarat, the festival is synonymous with Garba and Dandiya Raas — communities dance in circles around a decorated central lamp (garba) or with sticks (dandiya), often through the night, dressed in colourful chaniya choli and kediyu. Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Mumbai host massive Garba nights. In Bengal, the last 4 days (Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, Dashami) are celebrated as Durga Puja — elaborate pandals housing artistically crafted Durga idols, accompanied by dhunuchi naach, sindur khela, and rich Bengali sweets. In Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, families set up Golu — tiered displays of dolls representing gods, scenes from mythology, and everyday life. In North India, Navratri is observed with strict fasting (no grains, only sabudana, kuttu, samak rice), Durga Saptashati recitation, and Ramlila performances. In Punjab, families do jagrans (all-night devotional singing).

How to make a beautiful Navratri photo wish card

Navratri cards should feel vibrant, feminine, and full of dance-festival energy. Our Canva backgrounds feature "Garba & Mandala", "Goddess Durga", "Lanterns Night", "Nine Kalash", and "Mandala Peacock" — capturing both the dancing energy (for Gujarati friends) and the devotional grandeur (for Bengali Durga Puja or North Indian devotees). For Gujarati Garba celebrations, the "Garba & Mandala" or "Lanterns Night" backgrounds work beautifully. For Bengali Durga Puja wishes, the "Goddess Durga" background is unmatched. Pair with wishes in the receiver's regional language. Use the colour of the day in your card if you want to honour the Nava Durga tradition (Day 1: orange, Day 2: white, Day 3: red, Day 4: royal blue, Day 5: yellow, Day 6: green, Day 7: grey, Day 8: purple, Day 9: peacock green). Sign off with "Jai Mata Di", "Subho Mahalaya", "નવરાત્રિની શુભકામનાઓ" (Gujarati), or "नवरात्रि की शुभकामनाएं" (Hindi).

Navratri photo card maker — FAQ

When is Navratri 2026 and 2027?

Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on Monday, 12 October and ends with Dussehra on Tuesday, 20 October. Sharad Navratri 2027 begins on Wednesday, 30 September. Chaitra Navratri (the smaller spring version) falls in March-April each year.

What's the difference between Navratri, Durga Puja, and Dussehra?

All three are connected. Navratri is the 9-day festival worshipping nine forms of Goddess Durga. Durga Puja (5-day Bengali celebration) overlaps with the last 4-5 days of Navratri and ends on Vijayadashami / Dussehra (10th day) — the day Durga killed Mahishasura and Lord Rama killed Ravana. So Navratri is the umbrella; Durga Puja is the Bengali subset; Dussehra is the celebratory finale on day 10.

What are the 9 colours of Navratri 2026?

Sharad Navratri 2026 colour sequence (Day 1-9): Orange, White, Red, Royal Blue, Yellow, Green, Grey, Purple, Peacock Green. The colour of the day matches the form of Durga worshipped — Gujarati and North Indian women often dress in the day's colour for Garba and puja.

Is fasting compulsory during Navratri?

Fasting is a personal choice. Devotees who fast typically avoid grains, onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food for all 9 days — eating only sabudana (tapioca), kuttu (buckwheat), samak rice, fruits, milk, and rock salt instead of regular salt. Children, elderly, pregnant women, and those with health issues are exempted. Many people fast on just the first and last days; others observe partial fasting.

What's a good Navratri wish for Gujarati friends?

For Gujarati friends celebrating Garba: "નવરાત્રિની હાર્દિક શુભકામનાઓ! માતા જગદંબાના આશીર્વાદ સદા તમારી સાથે રહે. ગરબાની રંગીન રાતો માણો!" (Heartfelt Navratri wishes!
